What the solar plexus chakra is

The solar plexus chakra, Manipura in Sanskrit, sits in the upper abdomen between the navel and the base of the ribs. It is the third of the seven main energy centers, and its name translates as "city of jewels."

It is associated with the colour yellow, the fire element, and the seed sound RAM. Fire is the right image: this is the center of will, drive, and the capacity to act. In the tradition it governs personal power, confidence, self-esteem, discipline, and the sense of being the author of your own life rather than a passenger in it.

It is the last of the three lower centers — the ones concerned with the personal and material — and it sits immediately below the heart. That placement matters in the tradition: personal power is meant to be the foundation for connection, not a replacement for it.

The solar plexus and the rest of the system

It sits between the sacral, which supplies creative and emotional impulse, and the heart, which governs love and connection.

The relationship with the sacral is the one most often described: the sacral generates the spark and the solar plexus carries it into action. Inspiration that never becomes anything is usually treated as a solar plexus matter rather than a creative one.
