A seven chakra stone set is one tumbled stone for each of the seven main energy centers that run along the spine, from its base to the crown of the head. The stones are chosen to match each chakra's traditional colour and qualities, so the set reads as a spectrum: deep red at the bottom, violet or clear at the top.
Most sets are sold as seven small polished stones in a pouch, and most arrive without a card explaining which is which. That is the single most common frustration with them — you have seven pretty stones and no idea which one is the throat and which is the third eye. Sets vary. Two brands can both sell a "7 chakra set" and include different stones for the same center, because several stones share a chakra in the tradition. That is normal and it does not mean your set is wrong.

1. Root chakra (Muladhara) — red — garnet or black tourmaline

Garnet is used for deep grounding strength; black tourmaline for protection and the sense of being anchored. In many sets this stone is red jasper or hematite instead — all carry the same grounding association.
2. Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) — orange — carnelian
Sits just below the navel and is associated with creativity, pleasure, emotion, and flow. Carnelian's warm orange is linked with passion, confidence, and creative spark. This is the easiest stone to identify in a set because almost nothing else in it is orange.
3. Solar plexus chakra (Manipura) — yellow — citrine or tiger's eye
Found in the upper abdomen, the center of personal power, willpower, and self-esteem. Citrine is used for sunny optimism and motivation; tiger's eye for courage and steady determination. Tiger's eye is easy to spot by its golden bands that shift in the light.
4. Heart chakra (Anahata) — green and pink — rose quartz or green aventurine
At the center of the chest, bridging the lower and upper centers, ruling love, compassion, and connection. Rose quartz is the classic stone of gentle, unconditional love and self-compassion; green aventurine for emotional calm and opening the heart. The heart is the one chakra with two accepted colours, which is why sets sometimes include both.
5. Throat chakra (Vishuddha) — blue — lapis lazuli or sodalite

Two quick tests when colour alone isn't enough. Selenite is soft enough to scratch with a fingernail; clear quartz is not. Labradorite looks like a dull grey pebble until it catches the light at the right angle, then flashes.
How to lay out a 7 chakra set
The simplest practice is a chakra layout. Lie down comfortably and place each stone on or near its energy center, working from the root upward so the sequence follows the spine.
- Root — at the base of the spine, or between the thighs if lying on your back
- Sacral — just below the navel
- Solar plexus — upper abdomen, below the ribs
- Heart — center of the chest
- Throat — at the hollow of the throat, or just beside it if that feels uncomfortable
- Third eye — on the forehead between the brows
- Crown — on the floor just above the top of the head
Rest there for ten to twenty minutes and breathe slowly, moving your attention up the sequence one center at a time. When you finish, remove the stones from the crown downward.
You do not need the whole set to practise. Many people work with a single stone for the area of life they most want to nurture, which is often more useful than trying to attend to all seven at once.
If your set doesn't match this list
It probably still works. Several stones share a chakra in the tradition, and sellers assemble sets from whatever they can source consistently. Red jasper instead of garnet, aventurine instead of rose quartz, sodalite instead of lapis, amethyst doing duty for both third eye and crown — all of these are common and all are traditionally defensible.
Match by colour first. If a stone's colour matches a chakra's colour, the tradition places it there. If your set includes a stone in a colour that appears nowhere on the chakra spectrum, it is likely a filler or a bonus stone rather than a mismatch.
The one thing worth checking: some inexpensive sets substitute dyed howlite or glass for the pricier stones. Dyed stones often show colour pooling in the cracks and a uniformity that natural stone rarely has. It does not stop you using them as a focus for practice, but it is worth knowing what you bought.
