Heart Chakra (Anahata): Meaning, Stones & Practices (2026)

The heart chakra governs love, compassion and connection. Its two colours, its location, stones — rose quartz, green aventurine, rhodonite — and the practices used to open it.

What the heart chakra is

The heart chakra, Anahata in Sanskrit, sits at the center of the chest and is the fourth of the seven main energy centers. Its name is usually translated as "unstruck" — a reference to a sound produced without two things striking together, which the tradition uses as an image of love that does not depend on circumstance.

It is associated with green and, secondarily, pink; the air element; and the seed sound YAM. It is one of only two centers with a second colour, which is why both rose quartz and green aventurine appear in chakra sets for the same position.

Its defining feature is its position. The heart is the fourth of seven — the exact middle. Below it sit the three centers concerned with the personal and material: safety, feeling, will. Above it sit the three concerned with expression, perception, and meaning. The heart is the bridge between them, and in the tradition that is not incidental. It is the point at which self-concern turns into connection.

Signs the heart chakra may need attention

Feelings and patterns rather than physical symptoms; prompts for reflection rather than diagnosis.

When it feels closed or guarded:

  • Difficulty trusting, or expecting to be let down
  • Trouble forgiving — yourself as much as anyone else
  • Holding grief that has not moved
  • Finding it easier to give care than to receive it
  • Keeping people at a manageable distance without quite meaning to

When it feels overextended:

  • Giving past the point of depletion
  • Losing your own outline inside a relationship
  • Taking responsibility for other people's feelings as though they were yours
  • Staying in situations long after they have stopped being good, out of loyalty

When it feels steady: you can give and receive without either feeling like a transaction, care for yourself with the same tone you use for others, and stay open without becoming boundaryless.

Grief and heartbreak deserve real support. This framework is a contemplative practice alongside that, not a replacement for it.

Heart chakra stones

Two colours, so two families of stone.

Rose quartz is the best known crystal in the whole system — soft pink, cloudy, associated with gentle unconditional love and, particularly, self-compassion. In the tradition it is the stone for softening rather than opening: the one reached for when the difficulty is how you speak to yourself.

Green aventurine is the green counterpart, muted and speckled, associated with emotional calm and openness. Where rose quartz is tender, aventurine is settled — often the better choice when the heart feels agitated rather than hardened.

Rhodonite is pink and black together, associated with emotional healing and specifically with forgiveness and working through hurt. It is the stone traditionally used for repair rather than for comfort.

Malachite is deep banded green, associated with transformation and with releasing old emotional patterns. It is considered a more intense heart stone and is usually recommended once, not habitually.

Emerald and jade both belong to the heart in traditional practice, jade especially for harmony and steadiness.

A common pairing is rose quartz with green aventurine — one for tenderness, one for calm.

Practices for the heart chakra

Heart practice is the gentlest of the seven, and the tradition is consistent that it should not be forced.

  • Place the stone at the center of the chest while lying down, breathing slowly into the ribs for ten to twenty minutes.
  • Chant YAM on a soft exhale.
  • Hold rose quartz in both hands at the chest and direct the same wish you would make for someone you love toward yourself. This is the classic self-compassion practice and it is where most people find the resistance.
  • Visualise green light at the center of the chest, expanding gently on the in-breath.
  • Place a pair of rose quartz stones in the relationship corner — the far back-right of a room from the doorway. Pairs are traditionally used for partnership.
  • Breathe into the ribs rather than the belly. The air element association, taken literally.
  • Practise receiving. Accept one offer of help without deflecting it. For a guarded heart this is usually harder than giving, and the difficulty is the information.

The heart chakra and the rest of the system

The heart sits above the solar plexus and below the throat.

The relationship with the solar plexus is the one the tradition emphasises. Personal power that never reaches the heart is described as force; the lower three centers are meant to lead here rather than stop short. Equally, a heart without a steady solar plexus beneath it is described as giving without boundaries — which is why heart difficulty is often worked alongside the center below it rather than alone.

Upward, the heart feeds the throat: the tradition holds that what you cannot feel, you cannot say. Difficulty speaking honestly about your own needs is frequently traced back to the heart rather than treated as a throat matter on its own.

Frequently asked questions

What is the heart chakra?+

Anahata, the fourth of the seven main chakras, sits at the center of the chest. It is associated with green and pink, the air element, and love, compassion and connection. It bridges the three lower centers and the three upper ones.

What crystals are for the heart chakra?+

Rose quartz and green aventurine are the primary stones, with rhodonite, malachite, jade and emerald also used. The heart is one of two chakras with two colours, which is why both pink and green stones belong to it.

What are signs the heart chakra is blocked?+

In the tradition it is described as difficulty trusting or forgiving, unmoved grief, or finding it easier to give than receive — or at the other extreme as giving past depletion and losing your own boundaries. These are reflection prompts, not symptoms.

How do I open the heart chakra?+

Common practices are holding rose quartz at the center of the chest while breathing into the ribs, chanting the seed sound YAM, visualising expanding green light, and deliberately practising receiving rather than giving.

Why is the heart chakra both green and pink?+

Green is its traditional colour and pink its secondary one, associated with tenderness and self-love. Chakra sets accordingly use rose quartz, green aventurine, or both for this position.
